8 Steps to your first role – Part 7: Know your Self-Taping
Breaking into the industry can feel daunting, but the right advice can help you take those first steps with confidence. In part seven of our series on helping you land your first role, our Manchester campus Careers Manager Adam McCoy shares why knowing how to make a self-tape is so important, and his tips.
Setting Up Your Shot
Make sure you’re well framed within the shot, with enough space around you to move naturally. You’ll want a clear, non-distracting background and good, even lighting so the casting team can see your face and movements clearly. These basics matter just as much as your performance, since they’re often the very first thing a casting director notices before you’ve even said a word.
Know Your Material
Learn the material thoroughly and stick closely to the brief you’ve been given, rather than reinterpreting it your own way. Casting teams are looking for whether you genuinely connect with the role, whether you can listen to direction, and whether you’re truly engaging with the material rather than just reciting lines.
Practise Before It Counts
It’s a great idea to practise self-taping regularly before a real audition opportunity comes through. Getting comfortable with the setup, timing, and process in advance means you’ll be far more relaxed and prepared when it actually matters, rather than fumbling with technical details under pressure.
Bring the Audition Room to Life
Remember, a self-tape is essentially you bringing your own audition room to life for a casting director, wherever you happen to be. You’re in full control of the whole process, which is a real advantage, but it also means it’s easy to become overly picky or overly critical of your own takes, second-guessing choices that were actually working well.
Trust Your Instincts
Try not to overthink it or chase perfection. A lot of your best, most natural work will likely come from the first few takes, before self-consciousness creeps in. Treat your self-tape exactly as you would a live audition room, and give it your best, most focused and committed shot.
