Performers College Birmingham Screens Student Short Films at Everyman Cinema
Performers College Birmingham welcomed its Level 6 Acting for Stage, Screen and Digital Media students to a special screening event held at the Everyman Cinema, marking both the premiere of their short film work and the conclusion of their studies at Performers.
The showcase featured eight short films, all produced as part of the Advanced Acting for Stage & Screen module and shot over the course of November the previous year. A total of 34 students took part, each appearing in at least one production, with most films featuring a cast of around four to five people. Beyond performing, students also took on behind-the-scenes responsibilities, giving them first-hand experience of what it means to work on a professional set. Principal Lecturer Steve Rehman led the project throughout, collaborating with fellow creatives on the writing and production of each film. Shooting took place across a range of real-world locations, including the lively Digbeth area and various other sites across Birmingham.
Among those in attendance were guest speaker and college Patron Omari Douglas, known for his roles in It’s a Sin and Constellations, alongside Dean of Performing Arts Adam Davenport and the course leadership team from the Birmingham campus.
Jennifer Mitchell, Head of School at Performers College Birmingham, commented:
The students have been absolutely amazing. The short films were spectacular. Everyone at Performers College is very proud of them all. We all wish them luck on their journey leaving Performers College and we’re excited to see where their careers take them.
Special Guest Omari Douglas added:
It’s really nice to come and join in this moment of celebration.
Sitting inside a cinema feels almost like entering the industry- it’s where films happen, so it feels like a momentous kind of stepping stone for them. It’s just great to see the essence of these young actors start to come through the work and see how they are applying themselves to the fact of being on screen. This is where it all starts for them – it’s just the beginning!
