8 Steps to your first role – Part 4: Knowing Your Casting Type

9 July, 2026

Breaking into the industry can feel daunting, but the right advice can help you take those first steps with confidence. In part four of our series on helping you land your first role, our Brighton campus Careers Manager Kirsty Yates shares her top tips on understanding your casting type.

Why is my Casting Type important?

Understanding how the industry sees you gives you clarity and direction instead of guesswork. Every actor has a type, and getting clear on yours is what makes your self-tapes, castings, and Spotlight profile really work for you.

What Roles Do People Already Cast You In?

Notice the patterns. The roles that keep coming your way — in training, student films, workshop casting — are showing you something real about your energy, your look, and how you land in a room. Ask trusted tutors or peers what they see in you; their perspective can sharpen your own.

Know Your Strongest Discipline

Are you strongest as an actor, singer, or dancer — and in what style? A belter or a legit singer? A tap dancer or a contemporary mover? Get specific, and lead with what books you work. Your strongest discipline is your calling card; newer skills can shine once you’re further in.

Match Your Material to Roles

Choose songs, monologues, and movement that fit your look, age range, energy, and skill set. The right material helps casting directors picture you in the role instantly, closing the gap between what they’re watching and what they need to imagine.

Own Your Casting (For Now)

Your casting type is your current entry point — a strong place to start, with plenty of room to grow. As you train and gain experience, your range will naturally expand. For now, focus on getting booked; the stretching comes next.

You don’t need to be everything — you need to be bookable.
