8 Steps to your first role – Part 2: Produce your showreel
Breaking into the industry can feel daunting, but the right advice can help you take those first steps with confidence. In part two of our series on helping you land your first role, our Essex campus Careers Manager Leanne Everitt shares her top tips on how to build the perfect showreel.
Think “moving headshot”
Your showreel is not a portfolio — it’s an audition. The very first seconds need to land with impact, because casting directors and agents make up their minds faster than you think. Open with the strongest, most compelling version of yourself and be authentic from the first frame. If you’re not connecting immediately, they’ve already moved on.
Choose material that fits you
This is not the place to prove you can do everything — it’s the place to show what you do brilliantly. Select songs, monologues and choreography that suit your casting type, showcase your range, and sit comfortably in your wheelhouse. If you’re not completely confident with a piece, it shows. Lead with your strengths, then build around them.
One discipline = one reel
Resist the urge to bundle everything into a single video. Keep it clean: a dedicated acting reel, a dedicated singing reel, and separate dance reels for each style — jazz, commercial, tap, and so on. A casting director looking for a dancer doesn’t want to sit through your monologue first. Make it easy for the right person to find exactly what they need, fast.
Make it current and castable
Only use recent footage — material that represents who you are right now. This is not a career retrospective or a greatest hits archive. Hair, look, physicality, and ability all change, and your reel needs to reflect the version of you walking into the room today. If your best clip is three years old, it’s time to shoot something new. Your showreel should feel like you walked into the room. Be real. Be castable. Make it easy to book you.
